Happy Autumn 2023.

Image
The first day of fall 2023 is on Saturday, September 23, in the Northern Hemisphere. Known as the autumnal equinox, this is the day of the year when day and night are approximately equal in length all over the world. The fall season is a time of change and transition, as the leaves change color and fall from the trees, the days get shorter, and the air gets cooler and hallmark Channel starts teasing with Holiday ads. It is also a time of harvest, as farmers gather the fruits and vegetables that they have grown throughout the summer. Fall is a popular time for people to enjoy outdoor activities, such as hiking, camping, apple picking, collecting cattails and arranging squash in decorative settings. My personal tradition on the first day of Autumn is to remove all Spring/Summer slipcovers and bring them to the dry cleaner. I also change out area rugs and bedding. People are also more inclined toward indoor activities like reading, watching movies, and baking. Oh, and eating. Hal...

Beauty is in the aye of the beholder. ( Just say yes. )

Image
On this day in 1993, The sitcom Frasier—a spin-off of Cheers, starring Kelsey Grammer, debuted on NBC television and became one of the most popular American television shows of the late 20th century. For those of us who watch (ed) this show, you cannot un-see the iconic striped chair belonging to the Dad, that sat among Fraziers classicly styled Seattle flat. For those who never saw the show, I have included a picture. Margaret Wolfe Hungerford is credited with introducing the classic quote " Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." It's true. Although some design decisions are agreed on en masse i.e. Sherwin Williams popular paint color Agreeable Grey, some choices are left to be enjoyed by one's own eyes. Bassett Furniture, established well over 100 years ago has grown in both popularity and design asthetic as more and more transitional frames and fabrics are added to our library on a more than just seasonal basis. Stop in, or better yet, make an appointment to discu...

Bassett Dining. Reflecting Maple, Oak, Cherry and you.

Image
Here is a fun (?) fact. Ask any Historian and he/she will tell you that the ancient Greeks were the first to designate a specific area for feasting. Back then only men were allowed access to the wood or stone benches where honey cakes and nuts were served, while women stood and young men found a spot on the ground. My, how times have changed. For a while, a more relaxed living style seemed to take away the need for a true Dining Room as people gravitated to kitchen islands and sitting comfortably in the Family or Great room, eating while watching television. Today, dining rooms are making a resurgence in interior design as homeowners seek to create an inviting atmosphere for their friends and family. Please know that Bassett is right with you. Mostly solid woods, performance fabrics and leathers and newly styled upholstered chairs with casters for easy movement will make your design experience easy, attractive and functional. Bring in your room size and a few inspiratio...

Autumn in Chester County, PA. It's time to design.

Image
I live in Chester County, PA and love the 4 Seasons. Not just the singing group founded by Frankie Valley, but the actual Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter changes. If you are looking to redo an entire space, the warm, Autumnal tones of a Chester County Fall will create a cozy and inviting enviornment. But one doesn't have to complete an entire makeover to achieve warm, cozy results. Consider gathering turned, fallen leaves and spray so that you don't bring unwanted guests inside. Maybe hollow out a few pumpkins and fill with a group of mums. Place gourds on the mantle, Yankee Candle Midsummers Night burning in the evening air and a faux throw to add to your atmosphere. Tomorrow may be 96 degrees, but still...it's time to welcome Fall. Jim Clarey JPClarey@BassettFurniture.Com 610-337-1249

Leather Furniture and its benefits.

Image
Leather Furniture and its benefits. I am featuring leather upholstery today because we are preparing to have a major sale on all leather stationary and motion upholstery. Although leather costs more than most upholstery fabric, there are many benefits to selecting leather pieces for your home or office.Firstly, leather looks great and usually outlasts upholstery fabric 4 to 1, making leather an excellent choice for families with children animals, etc. Leather actually becomes stronger over time. Specially died leathers keep their richness and brightness because the color is absorbed into the material. Easy to clean, leather only needs a soft cloth to wipe off dust and maybe vaccuum once in a while. As supple and attractive as leather is, it nonverbally invites visitors to sit and enjoy its comfort. Almost like an "old school" memory foam gel mattress, leather breathes so it quickly adjusts to body temperature. Like you and I, leather ages well as it becomes softer and more su...

Functional Accessories vs Decorative Accessories/The finishing touches to a space.

Image
Here is a brief accessory tutorial that I hope you find informative. Functional accessories are items that serve a specific role. Examples of this type of accessory include ashtrays, clocks, lamps and candles. Purely decorative accessories include pictures, sculptures floral arrangements and photos. Many consider mirrors to be purely decorative but I disagree, especially after enjoying a spinach salad. Visit me and I will help you to accessorize, whether it be strictly functional or decorative or hopefully both. Jim Clarey JPClarey@BassettFurniture.com 610-337-1249
