The first day of fall 2023 is on Saturday, September 23, in the Northern Hemisphere. Known as the autumnal equinox, this is the day of the year when day and night are approximately equal in length all over the world. The fall season is a time of change and transition, as the leaves change color and fall from the trees, the days get shorter, and the air gets cooler and hallmark Channel starts teasing with Holiday ads. It is also a time of harvest, as farmers gather the fruits and vegetables that they have grown throughout the summer. Fall is a popular time for people to enjoy outdoor activities, such as hiking, camping, apple picking, collecting cattails and arranging squash in decorative settings. My personal tradition on the first day of Autumn is to remove all Spring/Summer slipcovers and bring them to the dry cleaner. I also change out area rugs and bedding. On this day in 1993, The sitcom Frasier—a spin-off of Cheers, starring Kelsey Grammer, debuted on NBC television and became one of the most popular American television shows of the late 20th century. Here is a fun (?) fact. Ask any Historian and he/she will tell you that the ancient Greeks were the first to designate a specific area for feasting. Back then only men were allowed access to the wood or stone benches where honey cakes and nuts were served, while women stood and young men found a spot on the ground. My, how times have changed.
